Program Puts More than 1,200 RI Youth in Summer Jobs, Work- Based Learning Aligned with Employers’ Skills Needs - GWB has awarded $1.8 million, an increase of $300,000 over last year, to two local workforce investment boards (WIBs) for summer jobs, internships, and work readiness programs for more than 1,200 youth across Rhode Island. GWB Announces Availability of “Rolling,” On-Demand Training Grants Allowing RI Employers to Apply for Funds Based on Their Budget Cycles, Not a State Deadline - The Governor’s Workforce Board RI (GWB) is announcing today the availability of Incumbent Worker Training Grants on a rolling basis, as opposed to the annual request-for-proposals protocol through which GWB has awarded and allocated the funding previously. Governor Chafee Signs Historic Apprenticeship Program into Existence at Annual Meeting for the Governor's Workforce Board (released by the Governor's Office)- During the annual meeting of the Governor's Workforce Board at the Crowne Plaza Hotel today, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee signed the paperwork for the CNC Machinist Registered Apprenticeship. Read more

Governor's Workforce Board Awards $1.5M to Train Nearly 5,000 employees (released by the Governor's Office)-The Governor's Workforce Board (GWB) Rhode Island will allocate $1.5 million in Incumbent Worker Training grants to improve the skills of 4,775 employees at 68 Rhode Island-based companies. $700,000 in Employee Training Grants Available to RI Businesses -The Governor's Workforce Board has announced the release of an additional $700,000 to fund Incumbent Worker Training in 2014 to help RI companies upgrade the skills of current employees and build a highly-skilled, high-performing workforce. Governor’s Workforce Board Announces Initiative to Provide Subsidized Work for College Students and Unemployed (released by the Governor's Office)-The Governor’s Workforce Board has launched the first phase of its new RI Work Immersion Program, designed to provide subsidized work experiences for Rhode Island-based college students and unemployed adults. Governor’s Workforce Board Announces Latest Express Grant Recipients - Grants Include Training for ProvPort Crane Operators (released by the Governor's Office)-One of the most recent Governor's Workforce Board Express Grants helped train eight Waterson Terminal Services employees to become certified operators of two new mobile harbor cranes at ProvPort. The cranes, purchased through a $10.5 million federal TIGER II grant, will allow ProvPort to expand its services and develop a container operation. ProvPort is one of two deep-water ports in New England. Read more

Chafee, joined by Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung at a State House press conference today, announced $2.1 million in state and federal funding for youth summer work experiences. Chafee announced today that the Governor’s Workforce Board RI has awarded $1.97 million dollars in Innovative Partnership grants, which bring employers and educational providers together to develop career opportunities for students, out-of-school youth and unemployed or underemployed adults. Chafee announced today that since January the Governor's Workforce Board has awarded approximately $65,000 in "Express Grants" to 15 RI companies seeking to improve the skills of their existing workers.
