Common elements of career pathways

To more closely align with WIOA and maintain the Career Pathways Advisory Group’s values the GWB definition has been updated. As agreed on by the Career Pathways System Development Sub Committee June 2016:
Career pathways are “a series of connected progressive education steps, training programs and support services that enable individuals to secure employment within a specific industry or occupational sector that will advance over time to successively higher levels of education and employment in that sector.”

Best Practices:

Good Career pathways typically include most of the following elements and activities:
  • Alignment with skill needs of high-demand industries

  • Provide a flexible delivery method in a full range of secondary, adult education, and postsecondary options (Diplomas, Industry recognized certificates and licenses, college level certificates and degrees, apprenticeships)

  • Multiple entry points and exit points that allow for seamless reentry

  • Regardless of where a student is educationally, the system is well-connected and transparent with integrated education and training, and occupational skills training. It should include contextualized curriculum, concurrent curriculum, Prior Learning Assessment, and acceleration opportunities

  • Lead to the attainment of an industry-recognized degree, license or credential

  • Help a worker advance within a specific sector or occupational field

  • Career navigation to include academic, career counseling, and wrap around support services, to facilitate cross-agency communication and a networked approach to client and student customer service

  • Include a work experience, internship or experiential component

  • Assessment is based in common metrics that are sharable, measurable and can be evaluated effectively
